FEEDBACK

Teaching with Emotional Intelligence

22 January 2009 (10am-4pm)
Client: Centre for Staff Education and Development, University of East Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ

I have been wanting to work with Andrea for a long time now, so it was really good to have that opportunity this year. UEA is committed to developing the knowledge, skills and awareness of its staff and Teaching with Emotional Intelligence is an important element of our programme. Her delivery was organised, energetic and enjoyable; and her willingness to engage with the participants' experience really valued. We shall be employing her again next year, as well as developing other opportunities where we can work together in the future.
Paul Levy, Head CSED, University of East Anglia, Norwich

Very well paced and it was good to hear from both Andrea and my colleagues.  Also, had a few lightbulb moments when I realised reasons for current practice and potential solutions.

BJ, School of Medicine

Very enjoyable.  Andrea is an excellent teacher.
NA, School of Development Studies

Gave me lots to think about.  Good to learn from others' experience.
CW, School of Social Work and Psychology

It felt safe, relaxed and everyone contributed.
SL, School of Medicine

Good to revisit skills
JS, School of Nursing and Midwifery

An interesting course that got me thinking.  Possibly a bit more on EI theory would  have been OK
GH, Centre for Staff Education and Development

Note from Andrea:
Future courses will entail participants getting some pre-reading on EI Theory so that the connection between theory and practice is more explicit.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is “the capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well, in ourselves and in our relationships.” (Goleman 1998: 317)

Working with Emotional Intelligence:
Being emotionally intelligent at work means that we are aware of and can manage, our intrapersonal skills (what is going on inside us) and our interpersonal skills (what is going on in/between, other people). This can enhance our practice.  Self awareness is the starting point in this process and through using the group and encouraging individuals to reflect on their feelings, attitudes and behaviours, we are able to develop the skills they already have and build on the competencies that might be missing.

Teaching with Emotional Intelligence:

There is evidence to suggest that when emotional intelligence is used in our teaching practice, then our relationship with students is enhanced. Engagement with the subject can increase; there can be greater motivation, a willingness to take risks, a readiness to collaborate with others and more creativity in the classroom. (Mortiboys 2002, 2005)   Our workshop invites participants to become critically aware and, through group work and feedback, explore and understand their teaching roles within the context of Emotional Intelligence. We will explore simple strategies to encourage and support emotional intelligence in our planning and teaching, as well as discussing ways of handling more challenging situations.

Please see Counselling Skills/Theory courses where you can explore your interpersonal and intrapersonal skills within a supportive group environment.
